About
Gustav Leonhardt was a Dutch harpsichordist, organist, conductor and pedagogue born in 's-Graveland in 1928. A central figure in the early-music revival, he championed historically informed performance on period instruments and helped establish the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. He recorded extensively for labels including Teldec, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Sony Classical, notably the complete Bach cantatas with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Leonhardt taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory and influenced generations of keyboard players; his refined, articulate style shaped modern Baroque interpretation until his death in 2012.
