Alphaville

Alphaville is a German synth-pop band formed in Münster in 1982 by singer Marian Gold and keyboardists Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens. They broke through internationally with the 1984 single “Big in Japan,” followed by hits such as “Forever Young” and “Dance with Me.” Their sound blends melodic synth-pop with new-wave and electronic elements, and they have maintained a devoted following across Europe and beyond. Key albums include Forever Young (1984), Afternoons in Utopia (1986), and The Breathtaking Blue (1989). After Mertens departed in 1987, the core duo of Gold and Lloyd continued, later joined by additional musicians. The band remains active, releasing new material and touring into the 2020s.
