About
The Philharmonia Orchestra is a London-based symphony orchestra founded in 1945 by EMI producer Walter Legge. It quickly became one of Britain’s leading ensembles, recording extensively for EMI and performing under conductors including Herbert von Karajan, Otto Klemperer and Carlo Maria Giulini. From 1964 to 1976 it operated as the New Philharmonia Orchestra before reverting to its original name. The orchestra is resident at the Royal Festival Hall and maintains an international touring and recording profile across classical repertoire from the Baroque to contemporary works.
