Johann Strauss I (1804–1849) was an Austrian composer and conductor who laid the foundation for the Viennese waltz tradition. Born in Vienna, he began his career as a violinist before forming his own orchestra in 1825. His energetic performances and original dance compositions quickly made him a central figure in the city’s musical life. Strauss is best remembered for works such as the “Radetzky March” and numerous waltzes that helped popularize the form across Europe. He toured extensively, bringing Viennese dance music to international audiences and influencing the next generation of composers, including his sons Johann II, Josef, and Eduard.
