Bio

Raymond Leppard (1927–2019) was an English conductor and harpsichordist renowned for his pioneering work in the revival of Baroque music. Born in London, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and quickly established himself as a leading figure in the early-music movement, championing historically informed performances of composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, and Bach. Throughout his career, Leppard held principal conducting posts with the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He was also a prolific recording artist, producing acclaimed editions and performances of operas and orchestral works that helped bring 17th- and 18th-century repertoire to modern audiences. In addition to his conducting, Leppard was an influential scholar and editor, preparing practical performing editions that balanced scholarly rigor with expressive vitality. His contributions to both concert life and recording left a lasting impact on the interpretation of Baroque and Classical music.
