Ernesto Lecuona (1895–1963) was a Cuban composer, pianist, and bandleader whose work bridged classical music and the popular rhythms of his native island. Born in Havana, he studied at the National Conservatory and quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic piano playing and gift for melody. His compositions—such as “Siboney,” “Malagueña,” and “Andalucía”—became international standards, blending Afro-Cuban percussion, Spanish lyricism, and jazz harmonies. Lecuona founded the Orquesta Ernesto Lecuona and toured extensively in Europe and the Americas, bringing Cuban music to new audiences. He also wrote for stage and screen, contributing scores to Hollywood films and Broadway revues. His influence on later generations of Latin and jazz musicians is reflected in the enduring popularity of his songs and the frequent recordings of his piano works.
