John Dowland

John Dowland (1563–1626) was an English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer whose melancholic songs and instrumental works established him as one of the most influential musicians of his era. Born in London, he served at courts across Europe, including those of Denmark and England, where his compositions for voice and lute gained widespread acclaim. Dowland's most celebrated works include the lute song "Flow My Tears" and the collection Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares, which exemplify the expressive depth of late-Renaissance music. His technical mastery of the lute and innovative approach to harmony influenced generations of composers and performers. Despite his international success, Dowland struggled to secure a permanent position at the English court until late in life, when he was appointed lutenist to King James I in 1612. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, preserving his legacy as a central figure in early music.
