Bio
Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977) was a British-born conductor who became one of the most influential and flamboyant figures in 20th-century classical music. Renowned for his lush, theatrical interpretations and innovative orchestral techniques, he served as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1912 to 1941, transforming it into one of the world’s premier ensembles. Stokowski championed new music, gave the American premiere of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, and collaborated with Walt Disney on the landmark film Fantasia (1940).
