Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) was an Italian composer, choirmaster, and string player whose work bridges the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Born in Cremona, he began his career as a string player and singer at the court of Mantua, later becoming maestro di cappella at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. His innovations in harmony, orchestration, and dramatic expression helped establish the foundations of modern opera and the seconda pratica style. Monteverdi’s major works include the operas L’Orfeo (1607) and L’incoronazione di Poppea (1643), the Vespers of 1610, and nine books of madrigals that trace his stylistic evolution from Renaissance polyphony to the expressive monody of the early Baroque. His music remains central to the early-music repertoire and continues to be performed worldwide.
