Bio

George Malcolm (1917–1997) was an English harpsichordist and conductor renowned for his pioneering role in the early-music revival. Born in London, he studied at the Royal College of Music and quickly established himself as one of the leading keyboard players of his generation, celebrated for his technical brilliance and expressive phrasing. Malcolm performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with many of the foremost ensembles of the day. His recordings of Baroque repertoire, particularly the works of Bach and Scarlatti, remain benchmarks for clarity and vitality. He also conducted choirs and orchestras, bringing the same precision and musical insight to larger-scale performances. Throughout his career he championed both historical instruments and contemporary harpsichord works, helping to broaden the instrument’s presence in concert halls and on record. His influence extended to younger generations of players, many of whom cite his example as formative to their own approach to early music.
