Bio
Reinbert de Leeuw was a Dutch conductor, pianist and composer born in Amsterdam in 1938. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and became known for championing 20th-century and contemporary classical repertoire. De Leeuw founded the Schönberg Ensemble in 1974 and served as artistic director of the Tanglewood Music Center from 1992 to 1994. He recorded extensively for Philips and other labels, focusing on composers such as Messiaen, Ligeti, and Kurtág. De Leeuw also appeared regularly as a pianist in recital and chamber settings. He died in Leiden in 2020.
