Bio

Shailendra (1923–1966) was an Indian poet and lyricist whose work shaped the golden era of Hindi film music. Born in Punjab and raised in Mathura, he wrote more than 800 film songs, many of them for composers Shankar–Jaikishan and S. D. Burman. His verses combined everyday language with social conscience, giving voice to the struggles of ordinary people while remaining singable and emotionally direct. Although best remembered for classics such as “Mera Joota Hai Japani” and “Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua,” Shailendra also penned ghazals and non-film poetry that reflected progressive ideals. He died in Mumbai at the age of 43, leaving a compact but enduring body of work that continues to influence Indian lyricists.
