Bio
Vladimir Horowitz (1903–1989) was a Ukrainian-American pianist widely regarded as one of the greatest virtuosos of the 20th century. Renowned for his dazzling technique, dynamic range, and distinctive interpretations of Romantic repertoire, he became a dominant figure in classical piano performance. Born in Kyiv, he studied at the Kyiv Conservatory before emigrating to the West in the 1920s. Horowitz made his American debut in 1928 and quickly established an international career, performing with leading orchestras and giving acclaimed solo recitals. His recordings for RCA and Columbia, spanning from the 1930s to the 1980s, remain benchmarks for pianists. Horowitz was celebrated for his performances of composers such as Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Scriabin, and his return to the concert stage in 1965 after a twelve-year absence was one of the most publicized events in classical music. He continued to record and perform into his eighties, leaving a legacy preserved in numerous live and studio recordings.
