Bio

François Couperin (1668–1733) was a leading French composer, organist, and harpsichordist of the Baroque period. Born in Paris into a distinguished musical family, he succeeded his father as organist at Saint-Gervais and later served at the royal court of Louis XIV, where he composed sacred and secular works for both keyboard and ensemble. His four books of harpsichord pieces, grouped into twenty-seven ordres, remain cornerstones of the French Baroque repertoire, celebrated for their refined ornamentation, expressive character titles, and innovative fusion of French and Italian styles. Couperin also authored the influential treatise L’Art de toucher le clavecin, which codified keyboard technique and performance practice of his time.
