Bio
Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857–1919) was an Italian composer best known for his opera Pagliacci, which remains one of the most frequently performed works in the verismo repertoire. Born in Naples, he studied at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella before embarking on a career that combined composing, teaching, and occasional conducting. Leoncavallo wrote several other operas, including La bohème and Zazà, but none achieved the lasting success of Pagliacci. His music is characterized by realistic dramatic situations and emotionally direct vocal writing, hallmarks of the late-19th-century Italian operatic style.
