Gianandrea Gavazzeni

Bio

Gianandrea Gavazzeni (1909–1996) was an Italian conductor, composer, and musicologist whose career centered on the opera houses of Italy. Born in Bergamo, he studied composition at the Milan Conservatory and made his conducting debut in 1940 at La Scala, where he later served as principal conductor and artistic director. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he led acclaimed productions at La Scala, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and other major Italian theaters, championing both the standard repertoire and lesser-known works of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Gavazzeni was also active as a composer of operas, orchestral music, and chamber works, and he contributed extensively to musicological research and criticism.
