Bio
Majrooh Sultanpuri (1919–2000) was an Indian Urdu poet and lyricist whose work shaped Hindi film music for over five decades. Born Asrar ul Hassan Khan in Uttar Pradesh, he adopted the pen-name Majrooh and began writing poetry in the 1940s before moving to Bombay to write songs for the cinema. He penned lyrics for more than 300 films, collaborating with composers such as Naushad, S. D. Burman, and R. D. Burman. His verses range from romantic ballads to socially conscious pieces, and many remain staples of Indian popular culture. In recognition of his contribution to Indian arts, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1993.
