Bio

Kenny Burrell is an American jazz guitarist born in Detroit in 1931. He is widely recognized for his work across bebop, hard bop, and soul jazz, and has been a prominent figure in the jazz scene since the 1950s. Burrell studied classical guitar and composition at Wayne State University before moving to New York, where he collaborated with leading jazz musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Jimmy Smith. His recordings, such as the influential album Midnight Blue, showcase his lyrical tone and melodic phrasing. Throughout his career, Burrell has also been active as an educator, teaching at UCLA and serving as director of the Jazz Studies Program. His contributions to jazz guitar have influenced generations of players and remain central to the genre's repertoire.
