Agostino Steffani

Bio

Agostino Steffani (1654–1728) was an Italian composer, diplomat, and Catholic priest renowned for his operas and chamber music. Born in Castelfranco Veneto, he trained in Padua and later served at courts in Munich and Hanover, where he composed numerous dramatic works that blended Italian lyricism with French and German influences. Beyond music, Steffani pursued a distinguished diplomatic career, acting as an envoy for the Elector of Hanover and later becoming Bishop of Spiga. His dual roles in church and state often took precedence over composition, yet his surviving works—particularly his chamber duets—remain valued for their expressive melodies and refined counterpoint.
