Steve Reich (born October 3, 1936) is an American composer widely recognized as a pioneer of minimalism. His early works, such as It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Piano Phase (1967), explored tape loops and phasing techniques that became foundational to the genre. Reich's music often incorporates repetitive patterns, gradual processes, and influences from non-Western traditions. Throughout his career, Reich has composed influential pieces including Music for 18 Musicians (1976), Different Trains (1988), and the video opera The Cave (1993). His work spans concert music, opera, and multimedia, and he has collaborated with ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet and his own Steve Reich and Musicians. Reich's compositions have had a lasting impact on contemporary classical, experimental, and electronic music.
