Bio

Gerald Finzi (1901–1956) was an English composer whose music is rooted in the English pastoral tradition. He is best known for his song cycles, choral works, and orchestral pieces that often set texts by poets such as Thomas Hardy and William Wordsworth. Finzi studied privately before settling in Hampshire, where he founded the Newbury String Players and devoted himself to composition and teaching. His output includes the Clarinet Concerto, the cantata Dies Natalis, and the orchestral work Romance for String Orchestra. Although his career was cut short by illness, Finzi’s lyrical, introspective style has secured a lasting place in the British repertoire, and his works continue to be performed and recorded worldwide.
