Coleman Hawkins (1904–1969) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist widely regarded as the first great master of the instrument. Born in Missouri, he began his professional career in the 1920s with Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, where his robust, harmonically sophisticated style helped establish the saxophone as a leading jazz voice. Hawkins remained a central figure through the swing and bebop eras, recording landmark performances such as his 1939 hit “Body and Soul.” His rich tone, advanced harmonic approach, and commanding presence influenced generations of saxophonists and solidified his legacy as one of jazz’s most enduring innovators.
