Bio

Bedřich Smetana (1824–1884) was a Czech composer widely regarded as the founder of the Czech national school of music. Born in Svitavy, he showed early musical talent and studied piano and composition in Prague. His works often incorporated Czech folk elements and patriotic themes, helping to establish a distinct Czech musical identity during the Romantic era. Smetana’s most celebrated compositions include the opera “The Bartered Bride,” the cycle of symphonic poems “Má vlast” (My Country), and numerous chamber and piano pieces. Despite increasing deafness in later life, he continued to compose until his death in 1884. His music remains central to the Czech classical repertoire and is performed worldwide.
