Bio
Karel Svoboda (1938–2007) was a Czech composer and conductor whose work spanned film, television, and popular music. Born in Prague, he became one of the most prolific Czech film-score composers of the second half of the twentieth century, writing music for more than 650 films and television productions. His style blended lyrical melodies with light orchestral textures, often incorporating jazz and pop elements. Svoboda’s scores for the long-running Czech television series “Hospital at the End of the City” and the international co-production “The Girl on the Broom” remain among his best-known works. Beyond film, he composed numerous pop songs that became hits in Czechoslovakia and abroad, collaborating with leading Czech vocalists and lyricists. His music continues to be performed and recorded in the Czech Republic and neighboring countries.
