Frederick Loewe

Bio

Frederick Loewe (1901–1988) was a German-born American composer best known for his long-running partnership with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner. Together they created some of the most enduring works in the American musical-theater canon, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, and Paint Your Wagon. Born in Berlin, Loewe studied piano at the Stern Conservatory and later moved to the United States, where he initially worked as a pianist and composer of popular songs. His collaboration with Lerner began in 1942 and produced a string of Broadway successes that combined memorable melodies with sophisticated storytelling. Loewe’s lush, romantic scores helped define the golden age of the Broadway musical, and several of his songs—such as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” and “Almost Like Being in Love”—have become standards performed across genres worldwide.
