Bio

Franz Krommer (1759–1831) was a Czech composer and violinist active in the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Born in Kamenice, Bohemia, he spent much of his career in Vienna, where he served as Kapellmeister to several noble households and later at the imperial court. His output includes more than 100 symphonies, numerous concertos—especially for wind instruments—and a large body of chamber music. Although overshadowed by contemporaries such as Haydn and Beethoven, Krommer’s works were widely published and performed during his lifetime. His concertos for clarinet, flute, and trumpet remain staples of the wind repertoire, valued for their melodic elegance and idiomatic writing. Today he is recognized as one of the most prolific and influential Czech composers of his generation.
