Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Bio

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was an Austrian composer and pianist whose career bridged the Classical and early Romantic eras. Born in Bratislava, he studied with Mozart in Vienna and later with Haydn, Salieri, and Clementi, absorbing a cosmopolitan style that combined technical brilliance with lyrical elegance. Hummel’s output includes piano concertos, chamber music, operas, and sacred works. His piano sonatas and concertos were widely admired in his lifetime, and his treatise on piano playing influenced generations of performers. He served as Kapellmeister in Stuttgart and Weimar, where he promoted both contemporary and older repertoire. Although his popularity waned after his death, Hummel’s music has been rediscovered in recent decades for its craftsmanship and melodic charm, securing his place among the leading figures of early nineteenth-century music.
