Bio

Giuseppe Sinopoli (1946–2001) was an Italian conductor and composer whose career spanned the major opera houses and orchestras of Europe and North America. Trained first in medicine and psychiatry before turning fully to music, he studied composition with Bruno Maderna and conducting with Hans Swarowsky, developing a reputation for analytical rigor and expressive intensity. Equally at home in the German symphonic repertoire and Italian opera, Sinopoli served as principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra (1984–1994) and music director of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden (1992–2001). His recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, especially of Mahler, Strauss, and the verismo operas, remain noted for their attention to inner voices and dramatic pacing. Beyond the podium, Sinopoli composed several works, including the opera Lou Salomé (1981) and various orchestral and chamber pieces that reflect his interest in expressionist aesthetics. He died suddenly of a heart attack while conducting Aida at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2001.
