Francesco Landini

Bio

Francesco Landini (c. 1325–1397) was a leading Italian composer, poet, singer, and organist of the Trecento period. Born in Tuscany, he became one of the most celebrated musicians of fourteenth-century Italy, known especially for his secular songs in the ballata form. His surviving works, preserved in major manuscripts such as the Squarcialupi Codex, include over 140 compositions, making him the best-represented composer of his era. Landini’s music blends French Ars Nova influences with distinctly Italian melodic and rhythmic traits, and he is often associated with the refined courtly culture of Florence. In addition to his musical output, Landini was admired by contemporaries for his skill as an organist and his poetic texts. His compositions remained influential into the early Renaissance, and modern performances continue to highlight his central role in the history of early European music.
