Bio

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637–1707) was a German-Danish organist and composer whose keyboard, choral, and chamber works form a cornerstone of the North German Baroque. He served for nearly four decades as organist of the Marienkirche in Lübeck, where his celebrated Abendmusiken concerts attracted musicians from across northern Europe, including the young J. S. Bach. Buxtehude’s surviving output includes numerous organ praeludia, chorale preludes, trio sonatas, and sacred vocal cantatas. His inventive use of stylus fantasticus, expressive harmonic language, and idiomatic writing for the organ influenced later Baroque masters and helped bridge Renaissance and high-Baroque styles.
