Bio

Giuseppe Taddei (1916–2010) was an Italian operatic baritone celebrated for his commanding stage presence and rich, expressive voice. Born in Genoa, he studied locally before making his professional debut in Rome in 1936 as the Herald in Lohengrin. His career was interrupted by military service in World War II, after which he resumed singing in Italy and quickly established himself at leading houses such as La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. Taddei became especially admired for his portrayals of Mozart’s Figaro and Don Giovanni, as well as for his vivid characterizations of Verdi’s Falstaff and Iago. He also excelled in verismo roles such as Scarpia and Tonio. Known for his clear diction and dramatic insight, he remained active on stage well into his seventies and later taught master classes, influencing a generation of younger singers.
