Sun Ra

Bio

Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, 1914–1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, and keyboardist whose work spanned hard bop, free jazz, and avant-garde experimentation. He led the Arkestra, a large ensemble known for its theatrical performances and cosmic themes, and released dozens of albums on his own Saturn label. His music combined dense improvisation, unusual instrumentation, and philosophical lyrics that reflected his self-mythologized persona as an extraterrestrial visitor. Sun Ra’s recordings and live shows influenced generations of experimental musicians and remain central to the history of jazz innovation.
