Bio
Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is best known for her compositions of sacred monophonic music, including the liturgical cycle Ordo Virtutum, one of the earliest known morality plays with music. Her musical output comprises nearly eighty surviving works, among them antiphons, responsories, sequences, hymns, and the visionary song cycle Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum. These pieces are notable for their wide melodic range and expressive text-setting, departing from the narrower ambitus typical of Gregorian chant. Beyond music, Hildegard authored theological treatises such as Scivias, Liber vitae meritorum, and Liber divinorum operum, as well as scientific and medicinal texts like Physica and Causae et Curae. Her extensive correspondence with popes, emperors, and other prominent figures of the twelfth century underscores her influence on both religious and secular spheres of medieval Europe.
