The Brand New Heavies are a British acid-jazz and funk group formed in Ealing, London in 1985. Emerging from the UK’s rare-groove scene, the band built a reputation for live instrumentation and tight grooves that blended jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop influences. Their self-titled debut album in 1990 and the follow-up Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 established them on both sides of the Atlantic. Subsequent releases such as Brother Sister and Shelter yielded UK top-20 singles including “Midnight at the Oasis,” “Dream on Dreamer” and “You’ve Got a Friend,” cementing their place in the acid-jazz movement. Over three decades the line-up has evolved around core members drummer Jan Kincaid and bassist Andrew Levy, with vocalists including N’Dea Davenport, Siedah Garrett and Angela John. The group continues to record and tour, maintaining the organic, dance-floor-friendly sound that defined their early work.
