Giulio Caccini (1551–1618) was an Italian composer, singer, and instrumentalist whose work helped lay the foundations of opera. Active in Florence, he was a leading figure in the Florentine Camerata, a circle of humanists, musicians, and poets who sought to revive the dramatic power of ancient Greek music. His 1602 collection Le nuove musiche introduced a new style of solo song with basso continuo accompaniment, emphasizing clear text declamation and expressive ornamentation. Caccini’s opera Euridice (1600) is among the earliest surviving examples of the genre, and his later work Il rapimento di Cefalo further explored the possibilities of staged musical drama. His innovations in vocal technique and monodic writing influenced the transition from Renaissance polyphony to the Baroque style, shaping the development of opera and secular song in Italy and beyond.
