Amilcare Ponchielli

Amilcare Ponchielli (1834–1886) was an Italian composer whose works bridged the bel canto tradition and the emerging verismo style. Born in Paderno Ponchielli near Cremona, he studied at the Milan Conservatory and achieved early success with the ballet Le due gemelle (1873) before turning to opera. His most enduring achievement is La Gioconda (1876), whose Act III ballet "Dance of the Hours" remains a concert staple. Other operas such as I promessi sposi and I Lituani demonstrate his gift for lyrical melody and dramatic orchestration. Ponchielli also taught at the Milan Conservatory, counting Puccini and Mascagni among his pupils, and left a modest but influential body of orchestral and chamber music.
