Bio
Cal Tjader (1925–1982) was an American vibraphonist, drummer, and bandleader whose career bridged cool jazz and Latin music. Born in St. Louis and raised in San Francisco, he first gained prominence in the Dave Brubeck Trio and later formed his own groups that fused bebop with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Tjader recorded for Fantasy, Verve, and Skye, releasing landmark albums such as "Cal Tjader’s Latin Concert" and "Soul Sauce." His crisp, melodic vibraphone style and knack for assembling top Latin-jazz sidemen helped popularize the genre on mainstream jazz labels. Tjader remained active until his death in Manila in 1982, leaving a catalog that continues to influence Latin-jazz and fusion musicians.
