Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) was a Czech composer whose prolific output spans symphonies, operas, ballets, and a large body of chamber and instrumental music. After early studies in Prague and Paris, he developed a distinctive neoclassical voice that blended Czech folk elements with the clarity and rhythmic vitality of 20th-century modernism. Although he spent most of his career abroad—first in France and later in the United States—Martinů remained deeply connected to his homeland, frequently drawing on Bohemian and Moravian musical traditions. His works are noted for their transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, and lyrical melodies, qualities that secured his place among the leading composers of his generation.
