Bio
Compay Segundo was a Cuban guitarist, singer, and composer who became one of the most influential figures in traditional Cuban music. Born Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz in Santiago de Cuba in 1907, he developed his distinctive sound over a career spanning eight decades. His nickname "Compay Segundo" ("Second Compay") originated from his role as second voice in the duo Los Compadres. Segundo gained international recognition late in life as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble. His signature instrument was the armónico, a seven-string guitar of his own invention that combined elements of the Spanish guitar and the Cuban tres. He continued performing and recording until his death in 2003 at age 95, leaving behind a vast catalog of sones, boleros, and guarachas that helped preserve and popularize Cuba's musical heritage worldwide.
