Bio
Naushad (1919–2006) was an Indian composer and music director whose work shaped the sound of Hindi cinema for more than four decades. Born in Lucknow, he began his career in the 1930s and quickly became known for blending classical Indian ragas with orchestral arrangements, creating a signature style that influenced generations of film composers. His scores for landmark films such as Rattan (1944), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960) combined rich melodic themes with large-scale choral and instrumental forces. Naushad’s emphasis on authentic instrumentation and careful attention to lyrical content helped elevate film music to a respected art form in post-independence India. Beyond the cinema, he composed numerous ghazals and light-classical pieces that remain popular concert and recording repertoire. His meticulous craftsmanship and deep respect for both tradition and innovation earned him a lasting place in the history of South Asian music.
