Bio
The Hilliard Ensemble was a British male vocal quartet founded in London in 1974, specializing in early music and choral repertoire spanning the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The group became internationally recognized for its historically informed performances and recordings of Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and contemporary works written specifically for their distinctive sound. Over four decades, the ensemble released numerous acclaimed recordings on labels such as ECM, collaborating with artists including Jan Garbarek and composers like Arvo Pärt. Their interpretations were noted for clarity, precision, and a commitment to textual understanding, earning them a reputation as one of the leading early music vocal groups of their generation. The Hilliard Ensemble disbanded in 2014 after a farewell tour, leaving a substantial recorded legacy that continues to influence performers and scholars in the field of early music.
