Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer, and bandleader whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Quivicán in 1941, he is widely recognized for fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, creating a distinctive sound that has influenced generations of Latin-jazz musicians. He first gained international attention in the late 1960s as a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna and later as the leader of Irakere, whose Grammy-winning recordings brought Cuban jazz to global audiences. Valdés has continued to perform and record as a soloist and with his own groups, maintaining an active presence on the international festival circuit.
