Bio

Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755–1824) was an Italian violinist and composer whose career bridged the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Born in Fontanetto Po, he studied with Gaetano Pugnani and quickly gained renown across Europe for his virtuosic playing and expressive style. Viotti spent much of his professional life in Paris and London, where he performed, taught, and composed. His twenty-nine violin concertos, chamber works, and pedagogical pieces helped shape the modern violin technique and influenced later generations of players and composers. Today he is remembered both for his enduring compositions and for his pivotal role in elevating the violin’s status as a solo instrument in the concert hall.
