Bio

Marin Marais (1656–1728) was a French composer and virtuoso viola da gamba player of the Baroque era. He served as a musician at the court of Louis XIV and became one of the most celebrated performers of his instrument. Marais composed extensively for the viola da gamba, producing five books of pieces that remain central to the instrument’s repertoire. His works are noted for their technical demands and expressive depth, blending French dance forms with Italian influences.
