Carl Czerny (1791–1857) was an Austrian composer, pianist, and teacher whose vast output of piano studies and exercises remains central to classical piano pedagogy. Born in Vienna, he studied with Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt, shaping generations of pianists through his methodical approach to technique and interpretation. Czerny composed over a thousand works, including piano sonatas, concertos, chamber music, and symphonies, though his pedagogical collections such as "The School of Velocity" and "The Art of Finger Dexterity" are his most enduring legacy. His music bridges the Classical and early Romantic styles, reflecting both the clarity of Mozart and the expressive demands of the emerging Romantic era.
