Clara Schumann (1819–1896) was a German pianist, composer, and piano teacher whose career spanned six decades. She was one of the most distinguished concert pianists of the nineteenth century and a leading interpreter of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and her husband, Robert Schumann. As a composer, she wrote piano concertos, chamber music, songs, and solo piano pieces that were widely performed during her lifetime. Her compositions are now recognized for their lyrical style and technical sophistication, and she is regarded as one of the most important female composers of the Romantic era.
