Jean-Pierre Rampal (1922–2000) was a French flautist widely credited with reviving the flute as a solo concert instrument in the twentieth century. Born in Marseille, he studied medicine before dedicating himself to music, later becoming principal flute of the Paris Opera and a professor at the Paris Conservatory. Rampal toured extensively, recorded prolifically, and championed both Baroque repertoire and contemporary works, collaborating with leading orchestras and composers. His warm tone and technical brilliance helped establish the modern standard for flute performance and inspired generations of players worldwide.
