Nelson Riddle was an American arranger, composer, and bandleader whose lush orchestral style defined the sound of mid-century popular music. Born in Oradell, New Jersey, he rose to prominence in the 1950s, crafting signature string and brass charts for Frank Sinatra’s Capitol albums and later for Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Judy Garland. Riddle’s work bridged big-band swing and the emerging easy-listening aesthetic, producing hits such as “Route 66 Theme,” “Lisbon Antigua,” and the instrumental “Theme from Batman.” His arrangements remain benchmarks for sophistication and emotional clarity in vocal-orchestra recordings.
