Guillaume de Machaut

Bio

Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–1377) was a French poet and composer whose works represent the pinnacle of the ars nova style in medieval music. He served as a cleric and secretary to various noble patrons, including King John of Bohemia, and later became a canon at Reims Cathedral. His compositions include the earliest known complete setting of the Mass Ordinary by a single composer, the Messe de Nostre Dame, as well as numerous motets, ballades, and virelais that blend intricate polyphony with poetic innovation. Machaut’s influence extended beyond music into literature; his narrative poems and lyric verse shaped the development of French poetry in the late Middle Ages. Manuscripts preserving his works, such as the beautifully illuminated Machaut manuscripts, attest to his contemporary renown and the high regard in which his music was held by both courts and ecclesiastical institutions.
