Bio

Fernando Sor (1778–1839) was a Spanish guitarist and composer whose works helped establish the classical guitar as a concert instrument. Born in Barcelona, he studied at the Montserrat monastery and later composed operas, ballets, and numerous guitar pieces while living in Madrid, London, and Paris. His guitar compositions—most notably the “Variations on a Theme of Mozart,” Op. 9, and the “Method for the Spanish Guitar”—remain central to the instrument’s repertoire. Sor’s balanced fusion of Classical-era clarity with idiomatic guitar technique earned him the nickname “the Beethoven of the guitar.”
